Google Sees TV Driving 15 Billion Connected Devices in Next 5 Years

Nikesh Arora, Chief Business Officer, Google Inc., opened day two of the Abu Dhabi Media Summit with a user-generated presentation. Arora took questions from the floor ranging Google’s ambitions in broadcasting, telecoms, the role of technology trends and regionalized content.

"We have no aspirations to be a telecom company or broadcaster, we are about discovery and helping people find the information they are looking for," said Arora.

"We are seeing early signs of demand for personalized content where we design what we want to watch ourselves. Today I pull content from different places to create my own package. The next big area for connected devices will be through TV, which we predict will drive 15 billion connected devices in the next five years," said Arora.

On technology trends Arora said, "It’s unfair to expect one Internet company to solve all the challenges of the Internet. There are many different players in the space, such as Twitter and FaceBook, social recommendation has its place. But, our challenge is to find efficient ways to make sense of all the data available. We try to solve problems with technical skill."

"There’s a tendency to overestimate the short term and underestimate the long term. In years past I would accept finding the information I needed in the first one two or three pages of a search. Today if I don’t get the real time information I need it’s frustrating. Location-based services are a strong qualifier because they can provide better provider information. But what’s interesting is how this will converge into the next application layer and what trends will it enable," said Arora.

With regards to Google on Regionality, Arora said. "Our model is to take something that’s already been translated and to look for commonalities in how sentences can be translated, it’s more accurate. We see a future where we can combine voice recognition and text to voice services so we can speaking a sentence into our phones to be translated in the cloud and our phone will speak the translation back to us. It will have significant impact on our culture. We believe it will be solved within the next ten years."
