Hitachi GST Acquires WD's Substrate Manufacturing Unit in Malaysia

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST), the hard drive manufacturing unit of Hitachi Ltd., announced that it has completed its previously-announced acquisition of Western Digital Corp.'s media substrate manufacturing facility in Sarawak, Malaysia.
WD manufactured aluminum substrates for hard drive magnetic media at the facility and has consolidated its substrate manufacturing and development operations into its Johor, Malaysia, facility.
As part of the acquisition agreement, WD employees at the Sarawak facility have become employees of Hitachi GST.
"We are pleased to have completed the acquisition and expect the Sarawak team to play an important role in the continued growth of Hitachi GST," said Steve Milligan, president, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
"We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Malaysian and local Sarawak governments for their ongoing support of our efforts to develop a local manufacturing presence and look forward to growing our employee base in Malaysia," added Milligan.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
