LiMo Showcases Next-Generation Handsets, Toolkits, Apps at MWC 2009

The LiMo Foundation, a consortium of mobile industry leaders, is unveiling a wide array of cutting-edge mobile devices, toolkits and next-generation applications at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2009 in Barcelona, Spain, February 16-19.

Developed to deliver richer, more compelling mobile consumer experiences, previews of the latest LiMo Platform technologies will be showcased in booths B135 and A125 in Hall 8.


"The debut of this latest collection of LiMo technologies confirms the mobile industry's coalescence around the LiMo Platform and endorses LiMo's vision for a truly open mobile ecosystem enabled by a collaborative development model and equitable, transparent governance," said Morgan Gillis, executive director, LiMo Foundation. "LiMo's ground-breaking role within the mobile industry is leading operators, manufacturers and developers to change the way they approach device design and development - spurring innovation and opening the door to more immersive, personalized mobile experiences for consumers worldwide."

As part of LiMo's mobile technology showcase, a collection of nine new feature-rich LiMo Compliant handsets will be introduced at MWC. These new devices bring the total number of commercially available handsets to 33, the largest number produced by any mobile open source consortium to date.

The latest LiMo Compliant handsets to be featured include:
- docomo PRIME series N-01A, docomo STYLE series N-02A, docomo STYLE series N-03A and docomo SMART series N-04A from NEC
- docomo PRIME series P-01A, docomo STYLE series P-02A, docomo STYLE series P-03A, docomo SMART series P-04A and docomo SMART series P-05A from Panasonic Mobile Communications

In addition, LG Electronics and Samsung will provide demos of LiMo Reference Implementations and innovative applications. LG will be providing technology previews of its sleek touchscreen handset, featuring WebKit-based Internet connectivity, a full Web browser, a Web Runtime for widgets and rich multimedia support. Samsung will be showcasing two innovative handsets as reference devices both running the LiMo Platform with a full set of applications.

The LiMo Foundation said platform, toolkit and application developer members of LiMo have innovated on top of the LiMo Platform to deliver cutting-edge applications and innovative UI toolkits. SDK demos will be provided by several LiMo member companies, including ACCESS, Azingo, LG Electronics and Samsung, featuring integrated development environments, editing and debugging tools, and virtualization technologies.

ACCESS will be showcasing its LiMo Compliant ACCESS Linux Platform 3.0, including a powerful user interface engine, comprehensive applications suite and full middleware layer.

Azingo will be showing Azingo Mobile 2.0, a LiMo Compliant software platform that includes the WebKit-based Azingo Browser, Azingo Web Runtime, a variety of mobile-web applications and the Azingo Web Studio, a complete Web SDK to accelerate applications development. These products and the Azingo Application suite will be demonstrated on a variety of device offerings ranging from high-performance touchscreen handsets featuring the Azingo Active Homescreen, to cost-competitive phones using keypad-based user interfaces that deliver rich multimedia and Flash Lite application support.

Software technology firm Acrodea will be offering technology previews of its Themed UI technology allowing users to personalize their UI with Social Networks, Branded and User Generated Content themes, as well as its VIVID UI and VIVID UI Workshop, GUI-based UI technologies and tools designed to improve user experiences and enabling better application interoperability.

Kvaleberg AS, a mobile handset software solutions provider, will be partnering with Compal Communications Inc. to preview its pre-integrated, complete, Mimiria software suite in a new version with an intuitive, fully multi-touch based user interface. Demonstrations of the customizable software suite will be featured on Compal's "Madrid" touchscreen hardware platform. Kvaleberg will also show its advanced development toolkit.

The Movial Internet Experience Suite (Movial IXS) will be presented by Movial. A next-generation software suite incorporating 3D graphics acceleration, Movial IXS will provide MWC attendees the chance for first-hand experiences with the latest UI effects, including 3D application transitions, fast PDF reader support and automatic UI orientation abilities for smartphones and other LiMo-compliant mobile devices.
