McAfee Inc. announced that it will open a new McAfee Labs facility in Santiago, Chile. The new facility is planned to open in the third quarter of 2010 and ultimately will house more than 60 highly skilled researchers, developers, quality assurance engineers and support experts, with potential for further expansion.
"This expansion of McAfee Labs will help us improve the McAfee customer experience and allow for more technical innovation," said Jeff Green, senior vice president for McAfee Labs. "The Santiago, Chile, facility will expand our global footprint and make McAfee Labs stand out even more as the world’s premier security research organization."
Hernán Cheyre, senior vice president of CORFO, the Chilean Economic Development Agency, said, "On behalf of the Chilean Government I am delighted to welcome today’s announcement by McAfee. This investment is highly significant for Chile and is a positive endorsement from an industry leader, further demonstrating the attractiveness of the region for companies seeking high quality research and development employees."
McAfee Labs is responsible for the technology that enables McAfee to secure millions of computer users around the globe. With more than 6,000 employees, McAfee operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week from offices in Asia, Europe and the Americas. The expansion in Latin America expands the company’s capability to deal with the continued onslaught of malicious software and to further innovate on McAfee technology.
Hiep Dang, director of McAfee Labs operations for the Americas, said, "By establishing a research team in Chile, we will not only be able to better serve our customers in Chile and Latin America, but around the globe. Chile is a great place to do this - the country has a plethora of talent and will give us a truly international operation that will support our drive to strengthen our position as the number one security vendor."
McAfee said Santiago was selected after a rigorous comparison of various locations around the globe. Contributing factors to the choice for Santiago were the city’s well developed infrastructure, the country’s political and economic stability, available government incentives as well as the strong emphasis Chileans put on education. McAfee has already made connections with major universities in Chile for recruitment and collaboration on curriculum.
"Security is a priority for businesses and individuals alike and McAfee has been at the forefront of cybersecurity ever since it was founded in 1987," said Green. "McAfee is an incredibly exciting place to work. I look forward to welcoming the new members of our team in Santiago as we strengthen our McAfee Labs operation and build a best-in-class team that will contribute significantly to the future of the company."
