NEC Corp. announced that it has received a contract from the Philippines' largest mobile phone carrier, Smart Communications Inc., to provide around 34 "5000 Series" SDH trunk microwave systems, including construction and follow up maintenance services.
SMART is a unit of the Philippines' largest fixed-line telecommunications provider, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), and is the country's largest mobile phone services provider with nearly 35 million subscribers as of end-2008.
The company is now establishing a primary communications network that supports large capacity data transmission for high revenue broadband services, which drive average revenue per user (ARPU), and may be adapted for 3G and HSDPA services. Furthermore, PLDT also plans to capitalize on the network to provide high speed digital data transmission.
NEC has worked previously with PLDT and SMART to provide services that include Switching systems throughout the past 18 years, and i-mode platforms. NEC views its selection to provide this latest trunk microwave system as recognition of SMART's high regard for these services that NEC has previously supplied.
The rapidly increasing number of mobile phone subscribers and individuals accessing mobile Internet services require the swift creation and support of microwave communications systems and quality infrastructure. NEC said that as a leading provider of wireless broadband communications systems, it will continue its proactive development and promotion of innovative new technologies.
