RDA Announces the World's First Single-pole, Nine-throw Antenna Switch in a Single Die Using IBM's SOI Process
GlobeNewswire 2011-08-22
SHANGHAI, China, Aug. 22, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- RDA Microelectronics
(Nasdaq:RDA), a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops
and markets Radio Frequency (RF) and mixed-signal chips for cellular,
broadcast and connectivity applications, today announced that it has
successfully developed the world's first single-pole, nine-throw
antenna switch with an integrated logic decoder, low pass filters in a
single die solution (SP9T) using IBM's Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI)
process. The SOI-based process offers superior performance and
significant cost reduction compared to GaAS alternatives.
"SOI is an excellent process for antenna switch. Utilizing this
advanced process, we are able to develop the world's first SP9T antenna
switch that integrates the logic decoder, low pass filters in a single
die with excellent ESD protection," said Vincent Tai, CEO of RDA
Microelectronics. "Since SOI is based on conventional high volume VLSI
processes, we can now produce advanced RF switch with higher yields at
a fraction of the cost of conventional GaAS integrated circuits.
Moreover, this highly integrated SOI based chip simplifies assembly and
packaging, providing further cost advantages."
"IBM has optimized RF SOI technology to meet the most demanding 3G and
4G performance and integration requirements," said Regina Darmoni,
director of IBM's Specialty Foundry. "The sampling of RDA's RF switch
product demonstrates how IBM RF SOI can deliver promising competitive
advantage in this highly demanding cellular market."
"SOI offers a compelling advantage for advanced RF applications. The
capabilities of IBM's RF SOI technology represent a significant
enhancement in simplification and manufacturing efficiency for
integrated wireless products," said Horacio Mendez, executive director
of the SOI industry Consortium. "This exceptional combination of RF
switches and filters demonstrates an important cost reduction while
delivering performance required by the Radio Frequency market."
The RDASW91 is a single-pole, nine-throw SP9T antenna switch packaged
in a compact 2.5x2.5 millimeter, 16-pin land grid array (LGA). This
low-cost switch has six GSM channel ports and three UMTS channel ports
suitable for use in the fast growing multiband 3G handset. Other than
high integration, this device also provides superior linearity,
harmonic performance and low insertion loss. The RDASW91 is expected to
lead a new wave of SOI based switches that will be introduced in the
near future.
