Worldwide demand to exceed $50 billion by 2013

Demand for water treatment products worldwide is projected to exceed $50 billion
by 2013. As the global population expands, and the developing world continues to
industrialize, the need for clean safe water and suitable treatment of
wastewater will boost demand for water treatment chemicals and equipment. In
many developing regions, such as much of the Asia/Pacific and Africa/Mideast
regions, too few people have access to safe water. An estimated one billion
people do not have access to a safe water supply, and a larger number yet do not
have access to sanitation facilities. In some nations, such as in Eastern Europe
and some industrialized Asian countries, the water infrastructure has expanded
to reach a large share of the population, but water quality remains subpar after
decades of disregard for proper water stewardship. Rapidly industrializing
nations, such as China and India, struggle with obtaining supplies of usable
water, especially in fast-growing urban areas, and with the difficulties
associated with treating and discharging wastewater. Wastewater treatment rates
usually are well below official estimates, and even treated wastewater is often
treated insufficiently. Even developed, affluent nations confront water
problems. Some countries, including the United States, have population centers
where native water supplies are inadequate or inferior, or the country as a
whole is lacking an adequate water supply. This has led to a renewed interest in
desalination, which had generally been considered too costly when compared with
water importation. Other countries with modern, welldeveloped water
infrastructures face issues including antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals
leaching into the water supply, pathogens in agricultural runoff, and the need
to reform water treatment techniques so they do not create additional challenges
such as trihalomethanes or other disinfection byproducts.

Global industry focused on improving water supplies

Most countries have little choice but to spend substantial sums to improve their
water supplies, and to expand access to them. In the Middle East, the largest
desalination market, efforts are underway to be less reliant on fossil fuels to
power desalination plants. Technological advances have allowed for improvements
in water quality without drastically increasing the cost of water. For example,
improvements in membranes and energy recovery devices have made desalination
more affordable. Countries with generally good water supplies, such as Canada
and the US, are able to treat water to meet higher aesthetic standards, far
beyond the basic criteria for safety and cleanliness, allowing for greater
elective use of activated carbon and other products. Industry efforts to address
and implement more exacting standards for water quality and wastewater discharge
will boost demand for high performance filter and membrane systems, in
industrial as well as municipal water treatment settings. Advancements in
desalination techniques will allow that technology to transcend its traditional
niche in energy-rich, waterpoor nations in the Middle East and grow in locations
with brackish and otherwise suspect water supplies, such as parts of the US,
Australia and Spain. In addition, efforts to reduce disinfection byproducts will
lead to greater use of nonchemical disinfection techniques such as ultraviolet
light and ozonation, particularly in Western Europe.

Study coverage

This new industry study presents historical demand data (1998, 2003 and 2008)
plus forecasts for 2013 and 2018 by product type and market for six regions and
23 countries. The study also considers market environment factors, evaluates
company market share and profiles global industry competitors.
