Firefox Crosses 100 Million Download Milestone

The Mozilla Corp. has announced that its Firefox browser has crossed the 100 million download milestone. The browser will complete its first year this November.

The company attributed Firefox's download success to the collaborative efforts of thousands of contributors worldwide. Mozilla Corp. said their work developing and fine-tuning the Firefox browser ensures the best Web experience available. Volunteer extension developers further enrich Firefox's capabilities by enabling users to customize and enhance their browser and truly take back the Web.

Mozilla has congratulated the members of the Spread Firefox community for their success in re-igniting the Web by driving the popularity of the browser. The corporation said their global grassroots efforts have set a new standard for software marketing and played a significant role in helping Firefox to achieve this amazing milestone.

Asa Dotzler, liaison for the Spread Firefox community, said, "Our community of more than 100,000 Firefox developers, testers, and grassroots marketers, is rejuvenating Web browsing, which is why millions of new users make the jump to Firefox every week. Spread Firefox members look forward to the next 100 million downloads as they mobilize for the exciting new release of Firefox 1.5."

The Spread Firefox community is said to be launching an even more innovative campaign for the upcoming Firefox 1.5 release later this Fall.

In celebration of the 100 million downloads the Oregon State Linux Users Group, Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium and the OSU Open Source Lab have teamed up to launch "Firefox One", a balloon satellite capable of carrying a 14lb payload to 100,000ft in elevation. The payload will be a large Firefox banner, CD, and camera to take photos of Firefox at the edge of space.

The weather balloon satellite will be launched this Saturday, October 22nd at high noon. Spectators are advised to arrive at about 11:45 am. For those who cannot make it in person, the event will be viewable on the Memorial Union Quad Webcam.
